Are You Ready To Howl At The Moon?

The first Full Moon of 2025, in the sign of Cancer, rises tonight. Known as the Wolf Moon, it was named for the howls of wolves feeling hungry during the bleak wintry cold of January.

The Full Moon in Cancer brings out all the feels. It's a good night to reflect on where you might need some nurturing or emotional healing. What has been weighing on your heart? What do you need to shift in order to grow in the coming year? What are you hungry for?

This year's Wolf Moon will be accompanied in the sky by Mars, retrograde in Cancer. If your sky is clear be sure to look up, as Mars will be visible to the naked eye very close to the Moon. The energy of Mars adds the possibility of emotional outbursts, conflicted feelings, or the impulse to protect those less fortunate.

The Moon in Cancer can also bring up thoughts of security, especially as it concerns hearth and home. Does your home feel like a sanctuary? Are you, like me, enjoying the warmth of the wood-stove on a cold January morning? Are you making plans for upgrades or renovations?

And while those thoughts are appropriate to the Wolf Moon, it's hard not to feel selfish or guilty in light of the devastating fires in and around Los Angeles, where untold numbers have lost their homes.

    The Paradox of Soulful Living

A fellow poodle owner I follow on Instagram had this to say — "I started to feel not right about sharing blue skies and joy while people are burning in fires whether from wildfire or war fire. And then I reminded myself so much of my schooling in life through both travesty and joy has been the learning to create space in my heart for both to reside at the same time... to see life with eyes wide open and offer my today’s moments of beauty and peace and safety to the greater healing of all of humanity."

Her words resonated with my own views, that In order to live a truly soulful life, it's important to embrace the paradoxical nature of our reality, to understand that it's okay to have conflicting emotions. That both are valid and necessary for the healing of the world. I hope her wise words resonate with you too!

If your heart hurts, it's okay to howl at the Moon, literally or metaphorically. If you want to create beauty and healing, it's okay to howl at the Moon. Tonight I will be howling with you.
